Teaching Process

Today I was talking with a friend of mine, who is also an elementary education major, about the process that we are currently going through to become a teacher (classes, praxis, etc.) and really, neither of us think a lot of it is very necessary. I understand the education classes and praxis exam - but the gen eds? I think they are completely unnecessary and a waste of money. Half the time we take the classes because they are going to be an easy "a" or because there's just nothing left to take. I know that I haven't taken any to challenge myself and it just seems really foolish that we spend so much money on these courses that don't have anything to do with me becoming a teacher. It's just really annoying.

  1. I feel that way some times although I have taken many classes that ended up being worth while. What do you think they should do about it? Do you think they should just eliminate the extra classes or do you think they should make it more structured and tell people what classes to take?

  2. Ok, a good question. Do some investigating to find out why the University of Maine requires general education classes...and also why other universities have ONLY gen ed classes.

A number of education critics think that no one should "major" in education...and that instead they should have only a content area background.

    What do you think?

  3. I agree with you on not needing to take the gen ed classes, I feel like its a coy way of getting more money from the students. Like really.. why would I need a nature of story class? When will I EVER use that in life? It just gets annoying.

  4. I think Gen. Eds feel unnecessary to you because you're sure of what you want. For those of us who enter college a little uncertain - or really, just because we feel we need to - gen eds are a valuable experience. They force us to consider courses we wouldn't have otherwise. I was originally enrolled in the journalism program, and even though I love my job at The Maine Campus, English Education is definitely where I belong. The only reason I figured this out? English gen eds.

  5. I don't mind general education classes, some times its nice to take something outside your major to LEARN something new. Even if it may be an "easy" A. I've taken a few courses out of pure interest that either counted as gen ed, or some times they did cover a credit I need, but had nothing to do with my major. I took Anthropology one semester, I found it very interesting and it was a course I wouldn't normally take.
